58 Year Old Woman Using The Hooker Deer Drag™

Special guest post from Roberta Huster, President of The Hooker Deer Drag Co., LLC.

Although I am married to an avid deer hunter, I am not a hunter of anything but a sale at a department store. I’m not any kind of an athlete. I’ve been a klutz all my life. My idea of fun is reading a good mystery or using the remote to find a good show on TV. I am 58 years old and I’ve been married to Steve Huster, the inventor / designer of The Hooker Deer Drag™ for 34 years.

Story Behind this Video

I’d always heard Steve and his hunting buddies brag about his deer drags, but I never actually saw them used until last year when we filmed our introductory video for The Hooker Deer Drag™. Since then I’ve watched Steve and other hunters use them, but I’ve never gotten the chance to do it myself. Everyone makes it look so easy, so I decided that I wanted to try to drag a deer. On November 10, 2012, Steve and I were in Stamping Ground, Kentucky for the opening weekend of gun season. We were hoping he would get a deer and we would film me dragging it for our website. Luckily, Steve was able to harvest both a large bodied buck on Saturday and a nice sized doe on Sunday morning.

So, on Saturday afternoon we set up the video camera and I successfully drug the buck (which field dressed at approximately 175 lbs.) up a fairly steep hill using the deer drags with the straps cinched around the antlers. I did it twice just to make sure the video was good enough. I was amazed that it was so easy and it didn’t hurt my hands. Just so I could make a comparison of using the deer drags as opposed to not using them, I tried to move the buck by dragging it by its antlers. The difference was immediately clear. It was uncomfortable to be bent over and it was difficult to hold on to the rack. I truly don’t believe I would have been able to drag that deer up the hill without The Hooker Deer Drag™.

On Sunday I got brave and decided to try to load a deer into a pickup truck bed. Steve told me to try the doe because she was smaller than the buck. She field dressed at approximately 120 lbs. We set up the video and as you can see, it was a piece of cake. Using The Hooker Deer Drag™ attached through her back legs, I had the doe loaded in less than 20 seconds. She followed me up into the truck so fast, it was over before I knew it. You can tell from the look on my face that I was delighted. Then I wanted to try the big buck. We set it up and I started dragging the buck into the truck bed. I was able to get his butt and belly up into the truck, but by then I was back against the cab and I couldn’t go any further. The buck was about 50 lbs heavier and a lot longer than the doe. The bed of the truck we were using was only 6 feet long. I ran out of walking space before I had him all the way up and I didn’t have enough strength to pull him the rest of the way. At that point, Steve jumped into the truck bed and in just seconds we pulled him in the rest of the way. I was so disappointed, but Steve thought it was amazing that I had gotten him up as far as I did. If the truck had been a regular 8 foot bed, who knows?

Well, a week later, I got another chance to load a buck into a pickup truck. Indiana’s gun season opened November 17, 2012 and on Sunday, November 18, 2012, Jody Engel, the poster girl for our deer drags, shot her first buck. After checking it in, Steve asked me if I wanted to try to load it. I said sure. This time I used the straps around it’s antlers so that we didn’t mess up the coat. I was nervous because I had failed with a slightly larger buck the week before, but this time I successfully loaded a 7 point buck that field dressed at 150 lbs. into the bed of our F250 4×4 Ford in less than 20 seconds.

I hope you enjoy watching my videos. I’m pretty proud of myself. I”m having fun showing them to our friends who hunt. The look on their faces has been priceless! Not too bad for a 58 year old woman who loves to shop!!

Good luck to all of you in your hunting endeavors….
